This is a very rare set of Goerge II rococo salt cellars made in London in 1746 to the very highest quality. Each of cauldron form with wide cast leaf and scroll rim, on three cast lion mask and paw feet linked by cast and applied floral swags, gilt interior.
These salt cellars have been made to the very highest quality and certainly comparable with examples by by Paul de Lamerie during the same period. The molding of the lions heads, the casting of the applied decoration and the incredible rococo border really sets these apart from other comparable examples from the period. They are also a very impressive size with a diameter of 4in giving them a real presence on the table.
Each salt cellar is fully hallmarked as one would expect but also is numbered from 1 to 4 and each have an individual scratch weight. Also all four salts bear the same engraved crest so it's clear these treasures have always been together and survived as an original set which is really quite remarkable.
